Where your AI prompts are stored and what happens to them

We send code, contracts and client threads to AI models and almost never check where they end up. Here are the kinds of storage and the questions worth asking any AI service.

Three places your data can stay

Chat history. To show old conversations on every device, the service keeps them on its side. Handy, but it is a copy of your data.

API logs. Even when an API has no “history”, requests may land in logs for debugging and abuse prevention, sometimes for weeks.

Model training. Some services use customer data to improve models by default unless you opt out.

Five questions to ask a service

  1. Are API prompts and answers stored, and for how many days?
  2. Does prompt content end up in logs?
  3. Is data used for training, and can you opt out?
  4. Can chat history be deleted for good?
  5. Can a key be restricted by IP and models so outsiders cannot use it?

How it works at Tenzo Cloud

Over the API we store neither prompts nor answers, not in the database and not in logs. The journal keeps only request time, model, status and token count: enough for your stats, but the content cannot be recovered from it.

The web chat keeps history, otherwise it would not be on your phone and laptop. Any chat or the whole history can be deleted in one click, permanently.

Keys can be restricted by IP, models, expiry and streams: a leaked key limited to your IP is useless to anyone else.

Why it matters right now

A year ago AI was a toy for experiments. Now source code, financial models, legal documents and client threads pass through it. If a service stores prompts, all that information sits with a third party, and access to it depends on that party’s policy, staff and security.

For companies it is also about compliance: customer personal data usually cannot go where it is unclear how it is stored and who sees it.

What you can do today

  • Split tasks: sensitive work only through the API with a key, the rest in the chat
  • Give staff separate keys instead of one shared key
  • Restrict keys to office or server IPs
  • Delete chat history you no longer need
  • Do not paste passwords, tokens or access keys into prompts; use placeholders

How to check a service’s promises

Read the whole privacy policy, not just the landing page. Look for specifics: which fields are stored, for how many days, who has access, how to delete. Vague wording like “we care about your data” is a reason to ask support questions.

FAQ

Do you train on my data?

No. API prompts are not stored, so they cannot be used for training.

What does support see?

Only metadata: time, model, status and token count. We do not have API prompt content.

Can I delete my account with all data?

Yes, settings have account deletion; chats and keys are deleted with it.
